Overcoming Resistance To DevOps? Engaging The Organisation

Gaining support for change initiatives to support digital transformation involves demonstrating real value quickly. This presentation describes the challenges of a large software project in a multi-national siloed organisation which seeks to adjust its ways of working to embrace the DevOps and cloud world. We review the complexity and interdependencies of moving from traditional deployment methods to a continuous delivery approach using DevOps. Culture change starts with promoting a vision for change, describing the engineering challenge ahead and learning and using new DevOps patterns. It is also necessary to engage with stakeholders in each silo to demonstrate the benefits of new tools and ways of working. This helps overcome the many challenges in terms of culture, politics, attitudes, skills, and process.

Keith has 30 years experience of leading software development and operations teams. In his previous role, he led a project in Ordnance Survey which has helped transform the way environments are provisioned using a combination of culture change, DevOps, open source tools and changes to business processes. This project dramatically improved the efficiency and effectiveness of the provisioning service and was shortlisted for the Real IT Awards in 2016. Keith has now been appointed as Director of DevOps for ADP UK for the iHCM product to promote continuous delivery and DevOps principles, patterns and tool within the development and operations teams. He has also spoken at various DevOps conferences and user groups.
